The Context: In a landscape of multi-year album delays, sloppy roll-outs, and multiple “debut” albums, Tyler, The Creator‘s consistent brilliance is a game-changer. Like clockwork, the contrarian-turned-critics’ choice continues to drop seminal bi-annual projects, from the woozy, drifting Flower Boy to the conceptual pop of IGOR. And his newest LP, the rap-heavy CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST, proves no exception.
Hosted by legendary mixtape master-of-ceremonies DJ Drama, T’s latest combines the aggressive, rap-heavy approach of the Bastard-through-Wolf eras with the technicolour sounds and introspective approach of recent years. At its core is a troubled narrative of unrequited love; despite his extravagant lifestyle and international ambitions, the newly-coined Tyler Baudelaire is unable to possess the one thing he truly desires — her heart. Alongside collaborators old and new, the rapper leaps between outlandish brags and cocooned thoughts, borrowing from every era of his career thus far for one of his most compelling works to date.
